Jewellery made of golden grass

BAGHI

A2 / A 33A

The golden grass from the Brazilian region of Jalapão is the basis for this elegant vegan jewellery.

Some of the artisans belong to the Xerente Indians, who have lived in this area for centuries. The mothers and fathers pass on the traditional patterns for jewelry and everyday items such as baskets in the family – of course, young designers from the region also have new ideas for jewelry made of grass.

The golden grass, in Brazilian “Capim Dourado” (botanical Syngonanthus nitens) is an endemic plant that only grows in the arid region of central Brazil. The grass stalks are dried by the heat of the sun and thus get their natural golden shine (colorfast/waterproof).

The harvest from September to January is closely monitored by the regional forest authority. The artisans harvest the grass themselves by hand and it takes up to five hours to harvest a kilo of grass!

The production of grass jewelery is an attractive job in the structurally weak region – the families use it to finance their livelihood, their children’s schooling and also their houses and properties.

We work directly with the artisans – jewelry couldn’t be more sustainable
