TrendSet Winter 2019: despite extreme weather and a special situation with the dates, a successful start to the 2019 order season

About 31,000 buyers and top decision-makers from all forms of trade came to Munich to TrendSet Winter 2019 despite the extreme weather and a special situation with the dates of the fair. The fair did not take place at its usual time on a holiday or at the weekend, but from Thursday, 3 January to Saturday, 5 January 2019. The shift in the dates was owing to the schedules of subsequent trade fairs at the Munich Trade Fair Center (Messe München). Considering these factors, this was a comparatively good result (with about 15% fewer trade visitors compared to the previous year) which, thanks to the great commitment of exhibitors, contributed to a successful start to the Spring/Summer 2019 season.

The managing directors and from the retail, wholesale, and online trades took advantage of the early date of TrendSet Winter 2019 to order after the Christmas business directly for the coming season and to again fill up the empty shelves in their shops with new goods. Besides ordering summer and Easter articles for Spring/Summer 2019, many directly ordered for the coming Autumn/Winter 2019/2020 season. According to the motto “After Christmas is before Christmas,” several of the approximately 2,500 exhibited brands and collections also contained preview articles for Autumn/Winter 2019/2020.

Good results despite the adverse scheduling and weather situation

The dates of TrendSet Winter 2019, which were set by Messe München, were discussed by exhibitors and visitors. “TrendSet organised everything very well as always. And Munich as a location is successful time and time again. However, our retail customers have told us that this time they were struggling with the dates of the fair, which were set completely during workdays due to the subsequent trade fairs. They would then have to close their shops and would not be able to fall back on their employees, as most of them are still on holiday at this time. This meant that many were unable to make the fair at all or only with difficulty. It is hard to understand why Messe München didn’t include Sunday in its plans,” said Caroline Vosteen in amazement. “This time, the dates of the fair are simply set unfavourably. We regret the decision of Messe München on the date,” said Arnold Maier, managing director of AM-Design. “It is all workdays, and the Sunday or the holiday (6 January, Epiphany) is not included. This is incomprehensible for us exhibitors. At TrendSet Winter, as the first trade fair event in the new year, we do our spring business. This time, the dates make it difficult for us to do so. It is hardly possible to recover from this—especially for companies without field sales. For young companies, such a scheduling decision can be a threat to their existence.” Peter Kwoka, managing director of Kwoka Floristik, sees the topic this way: “We are and remain fans of TrendSet! There is no alternative to TrendSet Winter as the first trade fair date in the year for the industry sector. At a time when the exhibition business is generally in a state of upheaval, we exhibitors find it difficult to understand why such an important trade fair date should be set to three working days so early. From our point of view, there is a need for optimisation.”

Owing to the adverse schedule and the high volume of snow in Bavaria and Austria, TrendSet Winter 2019 recorded about 15% fewer visitors than the number at the top event of last winter. Despite this, TrendSet is so strong as a platform for brands and trends that it held its own even against extreme weather conditions and an unfavourable schedule situation.

The trends at the first ordering event of the year for retailers

At TrendSet Winter 2019, exhibitors focused on showing their innovations and product assortments for Spring and Summer 2019. The products are characterised by a wide variety of design directions. Modern, purist, rural, luxurious, artistic, or colourful—what is possible is what pleases and gives pleasure. Elements from nature are integrated into the designs as a sign of rural cosiness or are artificially prepared. For Easter, pastel colours with a lot of rose, pink, and glitter dominate the decorations. More on the Spring/Summer 2019 trends at TrendSet Winter 2019 ….

In addition to the established Topic Areas Country & Style with trendy regional products, TrendSet Newcomer with new firms and young companies, and TrendSet Bijoutex with new accessories, TrendSet Fine Arts in January was a part for the second time. The art area of TrendSet successfully showed individual works and series of contemporary artists on the current spirit of the times. Exhibitors’ opinions from then TrendSet Interiors & Lifestyle Fair Areas:

Our trade fair business at TrendSet Winter 2019 is running very, very well. Our regular customers are here. Our four trend zones at the new trade fair stand are being well accepted and creating inspiration. Customers from IB Laursen are people who buy and sell with heart, who love the product. And this sort of person is who we meet at TrendSet in Munich.
Bjarne Jepsen (Sales Manager, IB Laursen)

We are satisfied. TrendSet Winter 2019 is running well for us. We are from Denmark and we are meeting a lot of prospective customers and customers from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
Annette Jacobsen (Controlling, Chic Antique)

Interesting customers come to TrendSet Country & Style. Our products are being well-received here. Our stand has a lot of visitors and we are taking good orders at TrendSet Winter 2019.
Sylvia Maier (Gackerl)

Despite a reduced number of visitors owing to the dates of the fair, the atmosphere at TrendSet Winter 2019 is good. In addition to the ordering for the spring and summer products, the pre-ordering for Christmas articles that we always co-exhibit is running very well.
Philip Lang (Management, Lang Kunstgewerbe)

Because of the unfavourable scheduling situation this year, we are noticing that there are fewer visitors here. But ordering is going well at our stand for us despite this. Our customers are here and are ordering our spring products. The free parking offered this time is being met with excitement by our visitors. Perhaps it will be offered next time again?
Florian Hofer (Management, Florex)

TrendSet Winter 2019 is superbly organised, as always. TrendSet in Munich simply always attracts a very high-quality clientele. We were again able to greet many new customers from Austria and Switzerland at our stand. For us, TrendSet is a must-go event. We have built up our brand with this trade fair. We are here again and again. All that aside, it would have been better had the holiday been a part of it; that was missing.
Carolin Zisgen (Owner, Vaca Vaca)

TrendSet Winter 2019 is well organised as always, and the clientele is right too. However, the dates of the fair this time are very unfavourable. Why Messe München did not add in the Sunday is not clear to us.
Cornelis Mulder (Managing Director, Cor Mulder)

TrendSet Winter 2019 is running super-well for us. Many customers and new customers are visiting us at the stand. The frequency of visitors and ordering are good.
Sophia Mamas (Owner, SORBET BRACELETS)

We can’t complain. In spite of the time schedule, we are able to record a good number of visitors and good orders.
Darwin Molenaar (International Account Manager Large Accounts, Light & Living)

Because of the special dates, the trade fair days are quite restrained. But our regular customers are coming to Munich in spite of the scheduling situation and extreme weather.
Nico Attasio (Managing Director, DECORAMA)

As a Danish exhibitor, we reach customers and prospective customers from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland at TrendSet.
Hanne Holm (Key Account Manager, Bloomingville)

We are satisfied with TrendSet Winter 2019. Our stand is well visited. Owing to the way the halls are organised, which changed, a lot of new customers have also discovered us. While we cover our Danish and Scandinavian audiences at trade fairs in Denmark, at TrendSet we reach prospective customers from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and northern Italy.
Gabriele Krüger (Key Account Manager Germany, Hübsch Interior)

We are very satisfied at TrendSet Newcomer. Our stand is in a great location and the audience here in Munich is very pleasant. The basic atmosphere at the trade fair is just as good as the ordering situation. The organisation of the fair is also great. The time for assembling the stand is very long, which made the beginning for us really relaxed.
Mona Lindner (Retail Sales, soul bottles)

It’s a little quieter than usual at TrendSet Bijoutex because of the weather and the dates of the fair, which are not so optimal. But we are having good order figures despite this and TrendSet always organises everything very well anyway.
Monique Eerden (Managing Director, Malique by me)

TrendSet Fine Arts is a a super forum for me as an artist. I have sold almost all my works here and made new contacts with people interested in art, but also with gallery owners. The art area of TrendSet is really well done. Pleasant atmosphere, great light, hanging of the works is beautiful and professional. In contrast to large art exhibitions, the artists and works are focused here, and visitors are not overwhelmed, but can calmly enjoy art and get to know artists. That is fantastic.
