TrendSet Winter 2023: on the way to becoming the strongest German
Interiors & Lifestyle trade fair for specialty merchants

  • First international Interiors & Lifestyle trade fair of the new year
  • Successful start to the Spring/Summer 2023 season
  • Significant increase in the number of visitors and a rising share of visitors from outside Germany

High numbers of orders despite sluggish Christmas business! Retailers and online traders are banking on the future and have ordered fresh goods for the new season and Christmas 2023 at TrendSet 2023. For trade visitors from the interiors, design, and lifestyle sectors, TrendSet Winter 2023 was the first opportunity of the year to order. The dates of 7 to 9 January 2023 were ideal. Directly after the holidays, TrendSet at Messe München kicked off ordering for the new season. Around 2,000 exhibitors and brands displayed their products and novelties for Spring/Summer 2023, Easter, and even Christmas 2023 in six well filled exhibition halls. The trade visitors came in large numbers. With a significant increase in visitors as compared to the previous year, TrendSet is experiencing strong, confident development with further growth.

We are living during a transition to new times. Nowhere is this more evident than in business and trade. People’s consumption and purchasing behaviour is changing rapidly. The retail trade is responding to this with new and creative concepts. The integration of e-commerce in brick-and-mortar shops, hybrid outlets, and brand experience hubs are only a few of the ways in which customers can be retained and new ones acquired. At TrendSet Winter 2023, much was exchanged and discussed. In the process, a positive development became very clear: Customers once again recognise the value of the stationary retail trade. What is required is a personal, custom shopping experience on site. New concepts are scoring points in inner cities. Smaller, specialised shops are springing up and making shopping more fun again. Larger forms of trade are increasingly distributed among smaller shops. Contact among professionals and networking with experts is more important than ever during these times. Equally important are, of course, the trends, innovations, and products of the coming season. For it cannot be denied that all forms of trade need one thing: products that catch on and sell. There were plenty of them at TrendSet Winter 2023 in Munich. Wholesalers, buyers, retailers, and online retailers from Interiors & Lifestyle, along with visitors from the hotel, restaurant, and catering trades, took advantage of the optimal dates of the fair to become informed of the latest trends for 2023 and directly order corresponding products.

Ideal trade fair location and best clientele: TrendSet becomes strongest Interiors & Lifestyle exhibition in Germany

In summer, TrendSet had already asserted itself as the most important Interiors & Lifestyle trade fair in Germany. On account of this success and the current development, the same became apparent for winter. The Christmas business, as well, is becoming more and more important at TrendSet Winter. Many exhibitors have gone over to showing their latest Christmas collections at TrendSet Winter, and there are more each fair. TrendSet is therefore well on the way to becoming the strongest trade fair of its kind in Germany in winter as well. Munich, as the ideal location of the exhibition, also contributes to this. As a region with strong purchasing power, the Bavarian capital boasts an ideal location, excellent infrastructure, and good accessibility for all visitors from central and southern Germany, the DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland), southern Europe, and southeastern Europe. Because the region regularly hosts tourists, many hotels are available; even the centrally located ones have moderate rates. The fair itself can be reached quickly and easily by all means of transport. “With its excellent infrastructure, TrendSet is always on track for growth. Many new visitors from the southern and eastern countries of Europe come to us, oriented to Munich. Interesting new markets such as the Czech Republic are opening up. This is a very exciting development that encourages us to position TrendSet even more internationally – with a focus on the retail trade – and to exploit the potential of the trade fair even more. We are building on the fact that, as in summer, we will also become the most successful trade fair for Interiors & Lifestyle in winter,” commented Tatjana Pannier, Managing Director of TrendSet, on the current situation and development of the trade fair.

Successful start to ordering in the new year and the new season

The exhibition halls of TrendSet Winter 2023 were just as full as the order books of its exhibitors. The often proclaimed demise of the retail trade could not be seen at TrendSet Winter 2023 in Munich. Trade visitors from more than 40 countries filled the six exhibition halls of TrendSet with a good mood, high level of interest, and great deal of ordering activity. Compared with the last fair events, a general trend that had already been observed in summer continued to emerge: Fewer visitors per company attended the fair. This is a development that TrendSet wishes to counteract, as a visit is valuable for all employees to see the products live and make contacts in the industry. The future is expected to bring more exhibitors as regards quantity and quality. TrendSet continues to be poised for organic growth. At TrendSet Winter 2023, orders were placed for the new spring and summer merchandise, Easter articles, year-round collections, and preview articles including the new Christmas products. The exhibitors were very satisfied with the outcome of the fair.

News from the TrendSet Topic Areas

TrendSet Topic Areas show special, focused, and innovative novelties and products from Living & Giving. As at past TrendSet events, at TrendSet Winter 2023, the popularity of the special and unusual offerings of TrendSet Newcomer, TrendSet Fine Arts, and TrendSet Bijoutex was great. The small, innovative, new, and local companies at TrendSet Newcomer were delighted with the high demand for their promising, regional, fair, handmade, and sustainable products. The good demand is certainly also owing to the new times in which origin, production, and sustainability of brands are playing an increasingly important role in the purchase decision. At TrendSet Fine Arts, artists from the art forms of painting, sculpture, photography, and graphic arts showed their contemporary art at fair prices. New art by promising artists as an investment is particularly in demand at the moment. Series and individual pieces for the assortment are, however, also opportunities for trade visitors to apply art to their business. TrendSet Bijoutex, with its attractive range of fashion, costume jewellery, and accessories, was also well frequented in light of the current times.

Wellness from nature: the trends in Spring/Summer 2023

In Spring/Summer 2023, as in past seasons, most designs revolve around nature and sustainability. The longing for depth, purpose, and permanence in uncertain times is often expressed in retrospective vintage, homely cottage chic, and cosy Scandi style. Soft shapes, calm colours, natural materials, and loving details elevate interiors, fashion, accessories, and lifestyle products into feel-good elements in the new season. Even glamourous designs only set discreet accents. Country cosiness, cheerful patterns, and relaxed collections lead to products with an optimistic statement in the areas Live & Give, Cook & Eat, Decorate & Create, and Work & Play.

It’s all about colourful and joyful: the trends for Easter 2023

Fresh pastels, natural subjects for Easter, iconic Easter classics in new guises, and unusual patterns await us in the Easter products for 2023. Glittery plush chicks, crocheted bunnies, and batik Easter eggs will romp on the Easter table along with tableware and accessories with delicate floral and animal ornaments. Easter will be colourful, cheerful, and varied. Country styles with natural materials and earthy colours will also find their place in the Easter nest.

Exhibitors’ opinions from TrendSet Winter 2023:

For us, Saturday was the best first day ever at TrendSet. Great order figures and also many visitors from Austria, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic. The volume of orders is huge, with high amounts. There are a lot of visitors here and all of them are in a good mood. We see that especially the new customers get an overview in the morning and come back in the afternoon to order. The clientele is well distributed over the days of the fair. On Saturday and Sunday, the retailers and the hotel trade come in greater numbers; on Monday, all the wholesale and executive buyers. We also see that especially hoteliers are coming to TrendSet more to find new decor and furnishings for their hotels. And the networking with the industry is just great here.
Nico Attasio (Managing Director, DECORAMA)

We are satisfied with TrendSet Winter 2023. Saturday, the first day of the fair, was nearly at pre-pandemic levels with regard to orders. Munich is a good location. The hotel rates are moderate, too. Many of our regular customers visit us here and also many decision-makers from the restaurant and hotel sector.
Ferry Mulder (General Manager, Cor Mulder)

The first day of the fair, the Saturday, was an excellent start to the fair. The customers are positive again; the quality of the products continues to rise. The most stable businesses in the market are those that attend the fair despite all the crises and use it as a platform. The fact that we also attended exhibitions in weak times and retained our sales structures means that customers are coming back now. The trade fair as a meeting place is simply essential for business.
Peter Kwoka (Managing Director, Kwoka Floristik)

We are very satisfied. We have very high average values here at TrendSet. The start of the fair on Saturday was good; Sunday was bombastic. There are many visitors, including from Austria and Switzerland. Our new Christmas collection is being well ordered. We are relieved that the mood in the industry is so good despite the general situation. That is encouraging for the rest of the season.
Lars Adler (Managing Director, HOFF Interieur)

The first day of the fair, the Saturday, was really good. Many regular customers were at our stand, and ordering in the run-up to TrendSet was brisk. Everyone here is in a good mood. The visitors want new products, especially with a lot of colour. How TrendSet runs and how it’s organised are great. Everything is simple and straightforward. And the TrendSet team is super. We are happy to be here.
Ute Vosteen (Managing Director, VOSTEEN)

Saturday was good and Sunday was also busy. Besides our regular customers, we have gained many new ones here at the fair. Everyone is in a really good mood. We’ve been at TrendSet for such a long time. This time, we’re also using the fair as a test market for our new brands “Parlane” and “Present Time” with their own exhibition stands to get a feel for how retailers are taking to the products. We are very satisfied.
Darwin Molenaar (Internal Account Manager Large Accounts, Light & Living)

TrendSet Winter 2023 is our only exhibition this year. Everyone is in Munich again and we’re selling well. Over the past three years, things have gone up again. The organisation of TrendSet is perfect. Everything is simple to organise, from registration to set-up. Everything happens as fast and directly as possible – even with the TrendSet team. First-rate.
Florian Hofer (Executive Management, Florex)

You can see that some customers are gone; their businesses just didn’t survive the crises. On the other hand, the quality of the visitors who attend is extremely high. There is a great atmosphere at TrendSet Winter 2023 and we have an insanely high purchasing level per customer.
Arnold Maier (Managing Director, AM-Design)

We are absolutely satisfied with how the fair is going. Beforehand, we were a little unsure about how things will be in the sector, but we are relieved. TrendSet Winter 2023 is a wonderful start to the new season. Ordering is going well at our company. We are super happy with TrendSet. The team and organisation are first-rate.
Philip Wurm (Managing Director, G. Wurm)

Our new stand design with a concept bar is being well received. Customers are meeting here and the industry, too. We now all have the opportunity to break new ground; the market is open to it. You have to think afresh for the customer to strengthen the POS. Here at our stand, there’s good energy and a lot of vibrancy. And the strategy is working. On the first day of the fair, Saturday, we already had around 30% more visitors than we could even handle with the staff at our stand.
Michael Rossmann (Managing Director, Pad Home Design Concept)

TrendSet Winter 2023 is going very well. As early as the first day of the fair, it was very full and busy – an excellent start to the fair. Most of our visitors come from Germany, but also from Austria, Switzerland, Croatia, and the Czech Republic. We’re getting a lot of new customers and orders. We like TrendSet; it’s a great fair. We do a lot of fairs, but TrendSet is definitely the best organised. And it has just the right size: large enough and with everything, but not so large that visitors are put off or tired. Customers thus just have a better and quicker overview of the sellers, products, and trends.
Philip and Philippa Ahlström (Executive Management, The Moshi)

We are at TrendSet for the first time and at a German trade fair for the first time ever. We want to bring our brand to Germany and find that TrendSet is a good presentation platform. This is where we reach the speciality trade in Germany. We have a special modern souvenir collection. Many end consumers know our products from their visits to the Netherlands, so we want to make our products available here. We are getting much positive feedback from visitors to TrendSet. They love our story and we are already taking a lot of orders. We are also establishing contacts to possible German resellers and looking for agents and dealers. TrendSet is also a fantastic opportunity to do this. We are having so many good discussions here. When you want to reach retailers or speciality retailers from the DACH region, you have to be at TrendSet in Munich, because all of them are here and TrendSet is a very good fair. For us, TrendSet Winter 2023 is going well all round.
Leanne van Doleweerd (Sales & Projectmanager HEINEN DELFTS BLAUW.)

Everything is good here at TrendSet Winter 2023. The customers are in a good mood; the flow of visitors is strong and constant. We are making many contacts, doing networking, and have a lot of new customers at the fair. It’s great here. Saturday started well and it’s still going. Setting up at TrendSet worked well; how things are going and the TrendSet team are excellent. Everything is perfectly structured. We are happy.
Hella Haase (Area Manager, Broste Copenhagen)

The fair is going quite well for us. Just the Saturday itself was fantastic. We’ve got many more orders than usual; at least 70% more than at the last TrendSet Winter. More orders, more trade visitors, and an exceedingly good mood. We are super happy!
Helene Ellingson (CCO, RICE)

We are at TrendSet for the first time and extremely satisfied. Saturday was super and Sunday even better. We had traffic at the stand the entire day and high sales. The visitors are happy to be here at TrendSet; you can see it. We meet many customers and prospects from Austria, Switzerland, and Italy here. We’re from Hamburg, so this is a great opportunity to finally personally meet our customers from the south. We’ve got a lot of positive feedback and confirmation here. We had thought about going to TrendSet for years. Now we’ve finally done it and are really happy about our decision. We will definitely be here again.
Denis Görz (Managing Director, DENKRIESEN)

We have a good order situation at TrendSet Winter 2023. The trade fair is going well, having already got off to a very good start on Saturday. The mood is good and our regular customers are looking forward to being live with us at the stand again.
Claudia Vamdrup (Sales Manager, Ib Laursen)

We are satisfied and have good traffic and orders, like we did last year. We have noticed that more restaurants visit the fair on Sunday. The organisation of TrendSet is, as always, excellent. Things just work right here.
Gerd Holz Portz (Sales Manager, Kunst und Bild)

We are satisfied here at TrendSet and fully on target. In terms of sales, we are on part with the last TrendSet in the summer. Many of our regular customers come here and have remained loyal to us in Munich. But we also get a lot of new customers here. The mood is generally good, including in our team, and the customers like it here. TrendSet and how it is organised are as good as ever.
Christian Foitzik (DACH Sales Manager, BOLTZE Home Collections)

We are at a trade fair for the very first time. We were courageous and founded our company in Greece in the middle of the crisis. However, the German market is more interesting to us. And we are very satisfied. The Newcomer Area at TrendSet offers us, as a new and relatively small company, a huge opportunity to present our ideas and products, to network, and to make our brand known in the industry. The fair is going really well for us. We have a lot of visitors at our stand, are making contacts, and have already received good orders. The feedback we get here from the trade is also extremely important to us. We will be back again!
Nopi Gaitanidou and Despina Fragiadaki (Executive Management, Decor Demon Studio) – Topic Area TrendSet Newcomer

Saturday was OK for us. In our area, we can clearly see that many shops had gone out of business in the wake of the crises. Of course, that means we lack sales. We hope that things will get better as the year progresses. As a trade fair, TrendSet is always fair and good at all times. And the prices are also really moderate.
Parasco Karathanasopoulos (Managing Director, Le Bijou) – Topic Area TrendSet Bijoutex

TrendSet Fine Arts is going quite well. I am at a trade fair for the very first time. The visitors here are very open and think in every direction. This is different than at exhibitions strictly for art. Visitors are interested in two things – both their private art collections and for their stores and businesses. What’s also great for us artists is the mix of exhibitors and the diversity here. TrendSet Fine Arts brings art closer, even to those who otherwise might not have much to do with it. For example, I’ve already made contacts with design studios, stores, and hair salons that wish to implement and use my art concept. It’s very exciting.
Florian Hügelschäfer (Dripping Art Artist) – Topic Area TrendSet Fine Arts
